APU Students Win 1st Runner Up in Big Data App Challenge

15 Dec, Wed - We are pleased to announce that our team of APU students, together with their mentor, Ms. Hema Latha Krishna Nair from the School of Computing & Technology (SCT), achieved a remarkable 1st Runner Up at the Big Data App Challenge 1.0, which was held on 15th December 2014 (Wednesday), at Le Meridien Hotel, KL. The team, comprised of Level 2 Software Engineering students -  Ian Coushanga, Breena Theseira, Liew Zhi Ying, Grace Tee and CY Lim, were the only student team in the Top 3 of the event.

Since their registration for the competition on 16th October, the team had been working hard on improving their knowledge in the Big Data field. It was a huge challenge for our team of students, as the competition was also open to members of the industry, and they were to compete with other participants, who are IT professionals. They attended various workshops and brainstorming sessions, and had gone through sleepless nights prior to the development of their project. The project developed by the team, the Malaysian Water Management System, were based on public open data from Ministry of Health on Dengue Mortality and its affected areas, as well as a dataset from the Department of Meteorological concerning the rainfall distribution in Malaysia.

We are absolutely proud of the students for their success. The competition was indeed a good exposure for them, and we hope that their achievements will inspire them to perform better in the future. Congratulations and thumbs up!
