APU Triumphs Again - APICTA Awards 2021

Our Top Mechatronic Engineering Student Announced as APICTA Champion - ‘Best Tertiary Student Project’!

We are delighted to announce that our student - Chan Hong Yi, who recently achieved a First-Class Honours in Mechatronic Engineering, blew away the competition by winning the ‘Best Tertiary Student Project’ Award with his unique project “Mechanised Musical Instruments” in the 21st Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2021. A total of 6 teams from APU competed in APICTA and 3 teams were shortlisted for the finals. We have been demonstrating our excellence in ICT at the APICTA Awards arena over the years, thus it is worth to note that this is our 20th APICTA trophy since 1999!

The Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) is an Award Programme with the objective to provide recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals, students, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and organisations with operations in Malaysia initiatives or building applications and services for the benefit of Malaysia. It recognises creativity, innovation, and excellence in Malaysian ICT. Winners of the APICTA Malaysia Awards will represent Malaysia at the International APICTA – in which many of our students have had such memorable experiences in the past.

With innovation in mind, Hong Yi’s project outshined other competitors by demonstrating how IR4.0 technologies are able to address real-life modern-day issues. Mentored by our colleague Ir. Ts. Dr. Alvin Yap Chee Wei from the School of Engineering, Hong Yi’s award-winning project comprised the development of Robotic Musical Instruments (RMI) to automate the playing of real-life instruments based on composed music pieces using AUTOMUSE, MICOM and IoT Dashboard. The overall aim of this project was to create a central control system (CCS) to manipulate mechanised musical instruments controlled and monitored by an IoT (Internet Of Things) platform.

Impressively, Chong Hong Yi has also been active in numerous competitions with the recent being crowned with the “Best Innovation Award” team winner at the recently concluded Innoserve Awards 2020 team challenge led by Dr. Freddy Tan Kheng Suan.

This is a perfect example of how hard work, perseverance and large doses of innovative thinking truly pay off when it comes to achieving success. We convey our warmest congratulations to Chan Hong Yi on his well-deserved achievements and Bravo to Ir. Ts. Dr. Alvin Yap Chee Wei for nurturing outstanding talents in APU. Best wishes to our graduates where endless possibilities lie ahead!
