APU - Homedeal Collaboration

The APU – HomeDeal Collaboration provides an opportunity for APU students, in specific e-Commerce modules, to experience a real-life e-commerce business scenario within a supportive classroom environment with no risk or capital investment.

The E-Commerce Business Project has 2 objectives:

  • To provide students with an understanding of a real business, the processes both internal and external to a business, and the importance of planning and strategy
  • To nurture e-commerce entrepreneurs for their future careers upon graduation.

Students enrolled in the BM011-3-2 e-Commerce module will be required to complete this e-commerce project as part of their course requirements. By the end of the semester, students must prepare a group report and give a presentation on this e-commerce business project.

HomeDeal provides a list of more than 150 well-known Malaysian-made products, primarily fast-moving consumer goods, for students to choose from and sell on Lazada, one of Asia's most popular e-commerce platforms. This e-commerce project uses a drop-shipping business model, in which students manage their e-shops on Lazada and sell the products using various digital marketing strategies, track orders, respond to customer query chats, etc. Payment, packaging, order fulfilment, and logistics will all be handled by HomeDeal.

More than 250 students from 8 intakes have participated in this e-commerce project, generating a revenue of RM10,383.22 from December 2019 to August 2021.

Overall, through this e-commerce project, our students have gained ‘Real’ business experience in e-commerce. The overall feedback from students with regards to this engagement has been very positive and encouraging.

“Experienced the actual action of managing an online business through an e-commerce platform. In the process of practice, we learned something beyond the knowledge in books”

“This was a good learning experience. I got to learn on how to work in groups effectively, improve my marketing skills and get familiar with the e-commerce platform”

“I have learnt to manage an e-commerce account. This project is something new to me and different as it is a hands-on project and interesting”.

“I have learnt to use the Lazada seller centre, how to upload items, the details of the items and how to sell items via Lazada”
Through this collaboration with HomeDeal, the School of Business has been able to invite industry experts to conduct talks and workshops on various topics of e-commerce such as Search Engine Optimisation, E-Commerce Trends, etc.

Mr Danny Ng, the founder of HomeDeal, has also delivered unique coaching sessions to our students as part of the e-Commerce module. Our students have greatly benefited from these talks, workshops, and coaching sessions, as evidenced by the careers of many of our graduates, many of whom have entered the e-commerce industry.

Moving forward with the HomeDeal collaboration, further initiatives will include industry visits, business led forums, more e-business related workshops and webinars, expanding the current internship coverage, and integrating additional real-world business problems across e-business modules. These new initiatives will further enhance the learning experience and employability of students.
