Bringing Back The Fun Of Learning With SoC QiZ4U@APU

Takes creativity to a whole new level in this first edutainment competition

After two years of uncertainty, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation's (APU) School of Computing (SoC) recently hosted an internal edutainment competition called QiZ4U@APU, a face-to-face game or mind sport session for students designed to bring back the fun of learning in the 'new normal' era.

The event drew 41 Master's, Undergraduate, and Diploma students, and each was given a link and code to join or enter a platform that displayed a live scoreboard on our giant screens at Centre Point and Atrium.

Each participant had 30 minutes to answer 20 multiple-choice questions on general computing questions on their smartphone.

This new in-house competition was created by Ts. Dr. Vinothini Kasinathan and her team of SoC lecturers, Ms Nur Amira Abdul Majid, Ms Lai Chew Ping, and T.Tulasi Sathyabama Appalasamy.

According to Ts. Dr. Vinothini, creating an awesome, fun, exciting, engaging, and memorable event for students, let alone building a community between new and old students to ensure that all students experience the fun of learning after two years of pandemic experience, was not easy.

“This is our first attempt at incorporating the concept of edutainment into this competition format, and we hope that it will help to restore the fun of learning for all APU students, as well as become an annual SoC competition.

“Funding from the university and support from other departments contributed to the event's success," she said.

First place winner Vanness Goh Ching Yi said ‘QiZ4U’ was a memorable event and a creative way of learning through interactive questions.

“It was an amazing concept. It was my first time experiencing this kind of competition where education meets entertainment.”

Oo Choong Sou, the second-place winner, had previously competed in virtual competitions, but this is his first competition at APU, and he is excited to be back on campus.

“QiZ4U is a great competition to enhance my education and future career prospects that involve IT,” he said.

“I intended to have fun and compete in a friendly competition with my peers, and I will enter other competitions in the near future.”

Third placed Shaun Lim Chung Liang stated that “The majority of the questions were general knowledge. However, it appears that luck was on my side as I managed to win third place. I intend to enter as many competitions as possible before graduating,” he concluded.

Apart from the three of them, Siew Kah Heng, Ngan Junn Fai, Aaron Bong, Tan Jun Wei, Lim Gin Young, Abdallah, Lim Avril, Fatima Taleb, Swee Hao Feng, Wong Xian Hao, Tegar Wicaksono and Chia Yan Ling were also among the top 15 winners.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Hari Narayanan P. Ondiveeran and Head of SoC Assoc. Prof. Wong Bee Suan presented prizes to each winner.
