APU-2-(House-of-Joy)

Recently, students from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), under the guidance of Ms Abbhirami Sivarajan (Lecturer, School of Business at APU), organised a meaningful community outreach initiative by taking the children from House of Joy (children’s home) on a learning-focused outing to the National Science Centre.

Rather than a traditional visit, the initiative was thoughtfully designed to give the children an opportunity to step beyond their daily environment and engage in learning through exploration, hands-on experiences, and shared discovery, allowing them to broaden their perspectives, while enjoying a meaningful and memorable day outside their usual routines.

Learning through exploration and shared experiences

At the National Science Centre, APU students guided the children through interactive exhibits that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. By explaining scientific ideas in simple and engaging ways, the students helped the children relate what they observed to everyday life.

Beyond guided exploration, APU students organised short reflective moments where children were invited to share what they found most interesting, reinforcing understanding through discussion.

Through storytelling, encouragement, and continuous interaction, the students created a safe and motivating space that nurtured confidence, curiosity, and a genuine enjoyment of learning throughout the day for the children.

A continued commitment to Community engagement

The outing left a visible impact on the children, who responded with enthusiasm, curiosity, and confidence as they explored new environments and engaged in hands-on learning.

Many appeared encouraged by the opportunity to ask questions freely, express their thoughts, and experience learning in an enjoyable and supportive setting beyond their usual routines.

For APU students, the experience offered valuable personal insight into the importance of patience, communication, and empathy when working with young learners.

Guiding the children through exploration-based activities allowed students to better understand how meaningful engagement, encouragement, and presence can positively shape learning experiences.

Overall, the initiative showed how a simple outreach activity can become a shared learning journey, offering meaningful experiences for both the children and APU students.
