A team of students from from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) successfully secured a Gold Medal (one of the Gold Medal winners) at the International Jasin Multimedia and Computer Science Invention and Innovation Exhibition (i-JaMCSIIX) 2025.
Team members Paureen Tan Nie Nie, Phang Shea Wen, and Chua Yexun represented APU, whereby they conceptualised, designed, and refined their project with a clear focus on addressing a real-world challenge through multimedia and computer science applications.
Mentored by Ms Aziah Abdollah (Lecturer, School of Computing at APU) and Ms Nur Amira Abdul Majid (Lecturer, School of Computing at APU), the team competed against participants from universities, research institutions, and industry backgrounds, distinguishing themselves through the clarity of their concept, the practicality of their solution, and their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in a highly competitive setting.
i-JaMCSIIX; organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Melaka, now in its 9th edition serves as an established international exhibition for innovations in multimedia and computer science.
Participants were invited to present products, e-content, research outputs, or conceptual solutions that highlight emerging technologies and contemporary scientific applications.
From Concept to Innovation
Beyond the final outcome, the project required the team to adopt a structured and iterative approach to developing their idea.
They progressed through several stages of refinement, carefully balancing creativity with practicality while ensuring alignment with the competition’s requirements and real-world context.
Throughout the process, the team focused on:
- Analysing contextual needs and setting clear objectives for their proposed solution.
- Organising their ideas into a coherent framework supported by relevant multimedia and computational elements.
- Reviewing functionality, clarity, and overall impact to improve the quality of the work.
- Adjusting their presentation approach to communicate their innovation clearly.
This development process allowed the team to strengthen their analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in presenting a refined concept for evaluation.
Learning through practice
Reflecting on the experience, the students highlighted how the competition pushed them to apply classroom knowledge in a practical and time-constrained environment:
- Paureen: “Despite balancing the competition with my academic commitment, participating in i-JaMCSIIX 2025 was a valuable experience, and winning the Gold Medal made the effort and collaboration with my teammates especially meaningful.”
- Shea Wen: “Participating in i-JaMCSIIX 2025, while completing my final diploma semester was challenging yet deeply rewarding, and winning the Gold Medal made every effort worthwhile, strengthening my confidence as i learned to refine our ideas into a clear concept and present them with assurance.”
- Yexun: “i-JaMCSIIX 2025 gave me a fresh perspective on turning abstract ideas into tangible solutions, and winning the Gold Medal highlighted the real-world relevance of our project while inspiring me to explore new challenges in multimedia and computer science.”
Inspiring Creative Minds at APU
This achievement reflects APU’s strong emphasis on experiential learning, applied innovation, and research exposure, where students are encouraged to develop ideas, test solutions, and present their work beyond the classroom.
By combining academic guidance, hands-on project development, and various competition exposure, APU continues to nurture students who are confident, industry-ready, and capable of making meaningful contributions.
