APU Students Brighten the Lives of Children Battling Cancer

For children undergoing cancer treatment, every day can present physical, emotional and psychological challenges. Amid hospital routines, medical procedures and long periods away from home, moments of joy can become especially meaningful. 

Recognising this, a group of students from the Foundation Studies programmes at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) dedicated their time and hearts to bringing comfort, encouragement and smiles to young patients at Ampang Hospital. 

Held on 22 May 2026, the outreach programme was organised as an official community engagement initiative under APU’s School of Business (SoB). Coordinated by lecturer Ms Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj, the visit reflected APU’s commitment to nurturing graduates who not only excel academically but also understand the importance of compassion, empathy and service to society. 

Throughout the morning session, from 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., approximately 50 children receiving treatment at the hospital’s paediatric cancer ward were treated to a series of uplifting activities designed to brighten their day and provide emotional support to both the children and their families.

The ward was transformed into a space filled with laughter and positivity as children enjoyed clown performances, balloon crafting sessions, interactive games and photo opportunities with a friendly teddy bear mascot. One of the most touching highlights was the distribution of handmade “Hug Me” teddy bears sponsored by Sheila’s Teddy, a community initiative dedicated to sewing and donating teddy bears to children facing difficult circumstances. 

In addition, every child received a specially prepared goodie bag containing snacks, vitamin C pastilles, puzzles, games, toys and comfort items. Behind the scenes, the School of Business, together with volunteers and supporters, worked tirelessly to raise funds and coordinate the preparation of 50 goodie bags to ensure every child would receive a meaningful gift. 

The programme was made possible through a collaborative effort between APU, Soroptimist International Shah Alam (SISA) and various community partners. As a long-standing partner of APU, SISA is part of Soroptimist International, a global volunteer movement dedicated to empowering women and girls through education, advocacy and opportunities for advancement.

While the gifts and entertainment brought visible excitement to the children, the greatest impact often came from simple human interaction. APU students spent time talking, laughing and engaging with the young patients, offering companionship and emotional support that extended beyond material contributions. 

Many students also took turns wearing the mascot costume, assisting with activities and ensuring every child felt included. Their willingness to step out of their comfort zones helped create an atmosphere of warmth and encouragement for families navigating one of the most challenging periods of their lives. 

According to Ms Cynthia, the initiative was designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of their role within society.

“This outreach aimed to cultivate empathy, compassion and social responsibility among our students while strengthening collaboration between educational institutions, NGOs and community partners. It reflects APU’s commitment to developing graduates who are not only knowledgeable and skilled, but also socially conscious and committed to making a positive difference,” she said.

For the students, the experience proved to be transformative. 

Zainab Waseem, a Foundation in Business, Finance & Social Sciences student, described the visit as one that would remain with her long after the programme ended. 

“Spending time with the children showed me how strong and resilient they are despite everything they face. It reminded me that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference. The experience was deeply humbling and inspiring.” 

Aqeela Zahyra Zuraimi, a Foundation in Computing & Technology student, shared similar sentiments. 

“The children taught me to appreciate life and remain positive even during difficult times. Their courage and determination were truly inspiring. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring them a little joy and hope.” 

Beyond the smiles captured during the visit, the programme served as a powerful learning experience that strengthened students’ understanding of active citizenship, volunteerism and community engagement. It reinforced the idea that education extends beyond lecture halls and classrooms, encompassing the values, attitudes and social awareness needed to contribute meaningfully to society. 

As a university committed to holistic education, APU continues to champion initiatives that connect students with real-world communities and social causes. Through such experiences, students gain valuable life lessons while developing the empathy and leadership qualities needed to become responsible future professionals.

The outreach also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. 

More importantly, it demonstrates how collective acts of kindness can provide comfort and hope to those facing difficult circumstances. For the children and families at Ampang Hospital, the visit offered a few precious hours of laughter and happiness. 

For the APU students, it served as a powerful reminder that true success is measured not only by academic achievement but also by the positive impact one leaves on the lives of others.
