SPE Student Chapter Excellence Award 2021

Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter at APU gains recognition from SPE International

In recognition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Asia Pacific University’s Student Chapter’s efforts in technical knowledge dissemination, uplifting society, and community outreach & innovation, SPE International presented them SPE Student Chapter Excellence Award 2021.

Established in February 2020, SPE APU Student Chapter has accomplished many milestones during the first year, including this outstanding accomplishment, with leadership from Syed Oubee and Abdallah Ahamada El Badaoui, the Presidents of the society. Their advisor is Ts. Harvin Kaur and consulted by Programme Leader, Ms Nur Ailie Sofyaiana Serasa.

APU is among three local universities winning this award, the other two are Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

“Our first year of operation exceeded all expectations, despite the COVID-19 challenge, we proved to be amongst the most active student chapters in Malaysia. That’s why we are even more thrilled to be awarded the Student Chapter Excellence Award from SPE international. This prestigious award is the second-highest honour a student chapter may receive and is awarded to only 20% of student chapters around the world,” said Abdallah.

The SPE APU Student Chapter kicked off with a trip to Indonesia for a smart competition early last year, followed by a geological field trip, and a collaboration with fellow Malaysian student chapters for a major event – SPE Malaysia Student Chapter Oil and Gas Convention.

The highlight of the first year of operation was their iconic event – Saturday is for SPE, which saw the first international collaboration with SPE Imperial college, SPE IFP School and SPE University of Houston. The event attracted participants from 33 countries, 60 universities and 40 SPE Student Chapters. This collaboration was done over 5 Saturdays, with 11 speakers and more than 200 attendees, which accumulated more than 3000 views and 4000 interactions on the internet.

After this success, they were invited to partner with the SPE Northern Emirates section to organise 7 technical talks over 2 weeks including an SPE Distinguish Lecturer Programme.

“It is with no doubt that SPE APU SC has found its place in the world, showing how competent we can be and proved that despite being new, small in numbers and inexperienced, we still have large capabilities and we have the drive to achieve our dream. The team at SPE APU SC is working tirelessly to not only bridge the gap between academics and the professional world but also expose members to the best practices for them to have a successful career, to enhance their professional & personal development while staying committed to spreading SPE’s mission in our university,” concluded Abdallah.
