APU Teams Participated in Mobile Data Visualisation Hackathon 2014

On the 6th and 7th of December 2014 (Saturday and Sunday), 11 teams of APU students, led by their mentors, Dr Kalai Anand Ratnam, Ms. Vinothini and Mr. Jason Leong from the School of Computing & Technology (SCT), participated in the Mobile Data Visualisation Hackathon which was held at KDC Building, Cyberjaya. The teams comprised 38 students who are currently in Level 1 of their Software Engineering degree, UC1F1406IT (SE) intake. Among the 11 teams, 1 team of students – Tan Bee Lan, Eng Yin Theng, Ooi Yih Woei and Leong Sen Fong, successfully qualified for the Final Stage of the competition, together with 9 other teams of participants.

Organised by Tune Talk, MDeC and Effective Measure, the Hackaton was organised based on the theme “A day in the life of a smartphone”. Participants were required to create interactive visualisations on mobile data usage that will analyse usage details of a mobile phone – where, when, how, why and which. The Hackaton was open to public; which saw participation of members from the industry, such as lecturers and IT professionals. Thus, it was a good exposure for the students who participated in the event, as they were able to understand more on the current trends in the IT industry by interacting with other participants who are working professionals.

It was a good experience for all of the students, as they already had a better understanding on the IT industry and had gained knowledge on essential IT skills such as programming and application development.
