Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently organised a masterclass and practical learning session at APU’s AGRHI Technology Hub, aimed at exposing students from the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence programme to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in transforming modern agriculture.

Titled “Advancing Agriculture through AI and Digital Technologies,” the initiative was organised by Assoc Prof Ts Dr Vinothini Kasinathan (Associate Professor, School of Computing at APU) and Dr Adeline Sneha John Chrisastum (Senior Lecturer, School of Computing at APU).

Discovering the future of Smart Agriculture

APU-2-(Advancing-Agriculture)

The masterclass commenced with Dr Adeline introducing students to major global challenges affecting agriculture today, including climate change, food security, labour shortages, inefficient resource management, and the increasing demand for sustainable food production.

Building on this foundation, students explored how AI is transforming the agricultural industry through predictive analytics, machine learning models, robotics, and smart monitoring solutions.

In line with this, students were exposed to smart farming systems capable of monitoring soil moisture, crop health, nutrient levels, and weather conditions through sensor-based technologies.

A new segment of the masterclass then focused on advanced AI applications, particularly Computer Vision in agriculture, to which students were introduced to image processing techniques and deep learning models used for early detection of crop diseases and continuous crop monitoring, highlighting the role of visual intelligence in precision farming.

The session then shifted towards sustainability and smart resource management, where students were encouraged to critically reflect on how digital technologies can support environmentally friendly agricultural practices, by reducing excessive pesticide usage, optimising water consumption, and promoting sustainable farming methods.

Experiencing Smart Agriculture Technologies

APU-3-(Advancing-Agriculture)

Following the master class, students participated in a practical learning session at APU’s AGRHI Technology Hub, where they gained firsthand exposure to modern agricultural technologies and infrastructure within a real-world environment, guided by Dr Vinothini and Dr Adeline.

The session provided valuable insights into digital farming tools, automated agricultural systems, hydroponic and smart cultivation techniques, sensor-based monitoring technologies, and sustainable farming practices.

Through this experiential learning opportunity, students developed a deeper understanding of how advanced technologies are integrated into modern agricultural operations to improve efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.

Bridging Innovation and Real-World Impact

The initiative provided students with valuable exposure to the evolving intersection between AI, digital technologies, and modern agricultural practices, allowing them to better appreciate the growing importance of technology-driven innovation within sustainable development.

Overall, the initiative reflected APU’s continued commitment to delivering engaging and industry-relevant learning experiences that prepare students to adapt confidently to rapidly evolving technological landscapes.
